Deschamps expects strong Griezmann contribution for France at Euro 2016

France coach Didier Deschamps is hopeful that key forward Antoine Griezmann will be fresh enough to power the host country's title challenge at Euro 2016.

Griezmann, 25, has scored 32 goals in all competitions for Atletico Madrid this season and will have more responsibility for France next month after Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema's omission from the squad.

Griezmann will be late joining up with the squad, however, as Atletico face Real in the Champions League final in Milan on May 28.

"He's moving up the levels," Deschamps told RMC.

"His consistency and efficiency at the moment are of a very, very high level.

"He's always had quality -- he needs to remain fresh. He's still young but he needs to manage that a little bit."

Griezmann has already played 53 games for his club this season so there are concerns that he will be tired both physically and mentally by the time France open their Euro 2016 campaign against Romania on June 10.

However, Deschamps, 47, is confident that Griezmann will recover ahead of the tournament, although he admits that the huge work rate Atletico manager Diego Simeone expects from his players has asked a lot of the former Real Sociedad player.

"Yes, certainly," Deschamps said.

"But it's done him good as well because he had a tendency of having highs and lows. Now he knows that it's every match, every week.

"He's strong athletically. With the accumulation of matches, he has the right to be a little tired but he's so fresh in his mind that it will go well."

Another potential worry for Deschamps is defender Raphael Varane, who was left out of many of Real Madrid's bigger matches in the second half of the season.

"I have total confidence in him," Deschamps said.

"With his club there's competition and decisions made by the coach, but he knows the role he has here.

"I don't have any particular worries.... he remains a top quality player."

Deschamps said it had been a "very difficult" season to be France's manager and acknowledged that he could have done without the off-field problems that ultimately resulted in both Benzema and Lyon winger Mathieu Valbuena missing out on Euro 2016.

France's 1998 World Cup winning captain was also forced to leave out Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, who is currently serving a provisional 30-day ban for an anti-doping violation.

With those issues behind him, Deschamps acknowledged that he already has his starting XI in mind for France's first Group A fixture at the Stade de France.

"There are still one or two uncertainties, but you also have to think about and plan the changes that I could be led to make," the former Monaco and Marseille boss said.

"That's above all my job -- to initially choose a strategy in relation to the opponent, to hurt them where they have weaknesses, to pay attention to their strong points.

"But it's also to be able to intervene at several moments with the three changes."
