Benzema, Pogba, Griezmann, Payet nominated for French overseas award

Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Dimitri Payet have been nominated for a new award recognising the best French footballer playing outside of the country.

The four players have been nominated for this season's UNFP prize by their fellow professionals in France's Ligue 1.

Benzema, 28, has managed to put his off-field issues to one side in impressive fashion, scoring 23 goals in 25 games in La Liga for Real Madrid. The Los Blancos striker has also helped his team reach the Champions League semifinals by weighing in with four goals in Europe.

But he will not be selected by France for Euro 2016 due to the fall-out of being charged with conspiracy to blackmail in November.

Griezmann, 25, has enjoyed his finest season at Atletico to date by hitting 29 goals in all competitions. He scored twice in Atletico's Champions League quarterfinal second-leg win over Barcelona and has also been in impressive form for France.

Payet, 29, has already been honoured by his fellow professionals in England this season after they voted him on to the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. The West Ham playmaker was also nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, which was eventually won by Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez.

Payet has had a stunning first season in English football, scoring nine goals and assisting nine more to help the Hammers to sixth in the Premier League table. The ex-Marseille player also scored three times in their run to the FA Cup quarterfinals and marked his birthday by netting with one of his trademark free-kicks in France's 4-2 win over Russia last month.

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has had more of a mixed campaign, but still managed eight goals in 33 matches as his side won Serie A for the fifth year in a row. The ex-Manchester United player will complete a league and cup double for the second year running if Juve beat AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final on May 21.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Angel Di Maria of Paris Saint-Germain, Nice attacker Hatem Ben Arfa and Marseille midfielder Lassana Diarra were nominated for the UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Year award on Wednesday.

And on Thursday it was also revealed that Lyon forward Ada Hegerberg has been nominated for both the women's Ligue 1 Player and Young Player of the Year awards.

The 20-year-old has hit 47 goals in 28 matches in all competitions this season for the French league leaders, including two in their 7-0 first leg win over PSG in the Champions League semifinals.

The award winners will be announced on May 8.
