France decide against Franck Ribery call-up

France coach Didier Deschamps has resisted the temptation to force Franck Ribery's hand and has left the Bayern Munich star out of his squad for Les Bleus' upcoming friendlies.

After missing out on the World Cup with a back injury, Ribery, 31, announced via German media earlier this month he would no longer represent his country.

There had been a suggestion, including from Deschamps himself, that he may decide to call up the former Marseille man for the matches with Spain in Paris on Sept. 4 and the encounter in Serbia three days later.

UEFA president Michel Platini, who helped France to success at the 1984 European Championship, warned on Thursday: "Should he be called up again, he'd have to join the squad, otherwise he would be banned for his club."

In quotes reported by the German news agency SID, Platini said that he was "surprised that Ribery made such a decision two years before the European Championships in France," adding: "It should actually be great for a Frenchman to play at home."

However, upon unveiling his squad for the games, Deschamps told media: "I note his [Ribery's] decision. The important thing is that he enjoys himself when playing and gets back to tip-top form."

Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette was the only surprise name in the 23-man squad -- replacing injured Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud -- with Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda being the only other member of the selection not to have been at the World Cup.

"They deserved to be there at the Stade de France for the first game since coming back," Deschamps said of those who had helped their country reach the World Cup quarterfinals. "I know what works with those players."

Deschamps -- France's 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000-winning captain -- explained Giroud would have been selected but for the fractured left foot he sustained against Everton last weekend, which will likely sideline him until 2015.

"I'm sad for him and for his club," he said. "He's just had an operation. He was important during qualifying and at the World Cup. The important thing is for him to get back in shape."
