Northern Ireland U17 captain Ethan Galbraith to join Manchester United

Manchester United are set to sign Northern Ireland under-17 captain Ethan Galbraith.

The midfielder, 16, has agreed a three-year contract and could seal his switch to Old Trafford as early as this weekend, according to the Northern Ireland FA.

Galbraith will initially join up with Kieran McKenna's U18 side, where he could play alongside Angel Gomes, who made his first-team debut in May.

Jim Magilton, the Irish FA's elite performance director, said: "We are all delighted that Ethan has signed for Manchester United.

"He has been a part of our elite development programme from the beginning, and we have been able to watch with enormous pride the huge progress he has made during that journey over the past four years.

"He was a pleasure to work with due to his character, attitude and enthusiasm for the game. He is an outstanding talent and I'm sure he will continue to develop and improve at such a fantastic club.

"We wish him all the very best and look forward to seeing him playing for Northern Ireland in the years to come."

Galbraith is the latest youth signing since former United midfielder Nicky Butt became head of the academy.

Dutch winger Tahith Chong, from Feyenoord, and forward Joshua Bohui, from Brentford, were two of a number of new signings to arrive last summer.
