Vanderlei Luxemburgo sacked by Flamengo

Flamengo have sacked manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo after nearly 10 months in charge of Brazil's biggest club.

Luxemburgo's dismissal comes just three rounds into the Serie A season, and on the heels of a controversial 2-1 loss at newly-promoted Avai on Sunday. Flamengo currently sit 17th in the table, having earned just one point.

The former Santos and Real Madrid coach assumed the job last July, with the club occupying the bottom of the league table.

Flamengo made an immediate rise under his command, finishing a remarkable 10th in the standings, for which "Luxa" was awarded a two-year contract in November.

The 2015 campaign started sweet, but ended sour for the club, however. A goalless draw against last-place Nova Iguacu in the final game of group play denied his side the championship's points title.

A listless two-legged loss to bitter rivals Vasco da Gama in the first knockout stage prompted a meeting with club directors about his future.

He survived, but his reign at the club would last just five more matches.

Luxemburgo, who played at Flamengo, was in his fourth passage at the club, having previously managed the Rio giants in 1991, 1995, and from 2010-12.

He presided over 245 games in charge, finishing with 127 wins, 67 draws and 51 losses. He lifted a Rio state title in 2011.
