Spain can go after Roberto Martinez if Belgium win the World Cup - Belgian FA

The Belgian FA would have no problem with Roberto Martinez taking over as Spain coach if he guides Belgium to the World Cup this summer, FA president Gerard Linard has suggested.

Martinez is preparing his side to face Brazil in Friday's quarterfinal, and declared himself surprised at speculation he could become the permanent replacement for Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked by Spain on the eve of the World Cup after it was revealed he would be taking the Real Madrid job after the tournament.

But Linard hinted that if Martinez takes the Red Devils to their first world title in Russia, he could be allowed to leave for the right price.

"I have heard of that rumour, but we have a deal with Roberto Martinez, who is a gentleman," he told La Derniere Heure.

"I'm not worried at all: I think the Spanish media is dreaming a bit. If we were world champions, you never know, and Spain were to make Roberto Martinez a generous offer... then it wouldn't bother me."

Fernando Hierro was appointed interim boss of La Roja and saw the 2010 world champions knocked out by hosts Russia in the round of 16.

Spanish media have suggested in recent days that Martinez, who had spells in charge of Swansea City and Everton, would be the ideal man to carry their national side forward, despite signing a contract extension through Euro 2020.
