American Mark Geiger to referee England-Colombia round-of-16 clash

American official Mark Geiger will referee the World Cup round of 16 match between England and Colombia.

FIFA announced the 43-year-old's appointment on Sunday afternoon. He will be assisted by fellow American Frank Anderson and Canada's Joe Fletcher.

It will be Geiger's third match of the tournament as referee after he also oversaw Portugal's 1-0 win over Morocco and South Korea's 2-0 victory over Germany in the group stage.

Geiger was the subject of some controversy after the Portugal game when Morocco's Nordin Amrabat claimed that he had heard the American ref ask for a Portugal player's shirt, but FIFA condemned the allegations.

In 2014, Geiger became the first American to referee a World Cup knockout-stage game when worked France's 2-0 round-of-16 win over Nigeria.

Geiger also was the referee for Colombia's opener in 2014, a 3-0 victory over Greece.
