Man offers 'profound apologies' for groping World Cup reporter during broadcast

A Russian football fan who groped a journalist during a live broadcast in Moscow has apologised to her.

The man, who identified himself by his first name, Ruslan, groped Deutsche Welle reporter Julieth Gonzalez Theran and kissed her on the cheek as she reported before last Thursday's World Cup opener between Russia and Saudi Arabia in Moscow.

German news organisation DW said the man had visited its office to offer his "most profound apologies."

It posted a video of his Skype conversation with Theran, in which he said he had made a bet with a friend that he would kiss a reporter on air.

"I acted carelessly," he said, adding that he was sorry that "an unsuccessful joke with a kiss on the cheek turned into sexual harassment."

Theran accepted his apology during their conversation.

Footage of the incident, in which Gonzalez Theran continued with her broadcast for several minutes, was subsequently shared widely on social media.

She has continued reporting from the World Cup, including Japan's 2-1 victory over Colombia in Saransk, Russia, on Tuesday.

Speaking via WhatsAp on Thursday, Gonzalez Theran, who has previously worked freelance assignments for ESPN, said: "I felt under pressure and humiliated. That wasn't funny.

"I couldn't even think [after the incident happened]. It all happened so fast. I felt an inner strength, which allowed me to carry on."
