Los Angeles' part in 2026 World Cup bid in doubt

Los Angeles' inclusion in the bid to host the 2026 World Cup is in doubt after the city council expressed concerns with FIFA's requirements.

The United Bid Committee attempting to bring the event to the United States, Canada and Mexico has invited 25 cities to apply to host games, with a deadline for Monday. As few as 12 cities may ultimately be chosen.

But as reported by the Los Angeles Times, FIFA rejected an L.A. tourism board's amendments to a host city contract. The city had objected to FIFA's stipulations that could make it financial liable for factors like police and public transportation.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he would seek an extension with bid committee, which must submit its application in March. FIFA is expected to award the tournament in June.

Last month, Miami was among a number of cities that expressed concerns with FIFA's requirements regarding airports.

Host cities stand to benefit from an economic impact from $90 million to $480 million after costs, according to a study announced by the bid committee on Thursday.

Among the cities that already have or are expected to support the bid are Seattle, Dallas, Baltimore, Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal.
