Baltimore to approve hosting duties for 2026 World Cup - report

Baltimore is expected to approve a deal to host 2026 World Cup matches if FIFA selects a joint North American bid, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The newspaper reported that the city's Board of Estimates on Wednesday is expected to approve an agreement between FIFA, U.S. Soccer and the city to host matches.

In June, FIFA will choose between a bid from Morocco and a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico to determine the 2026 location of the international tournament.

The North American countries have submitted a list of 32 cities that could host games, which is expected to be narrowed to around a dozen.

Maryland Sports Executive Director Terry Hasseltine said last year that M&T Bank Stadium would be an "ideal" World Cup venue.

Baltimore was not among the host sites when the U.S. hosted the 1994 World Cup, with M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the NFL's Ravens, not opening until 1998.

The stadium hosted CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals in both 2013 and 2015.
