Werder Bremen's Claudio Pizarro targets 2018 World Cup with Peru

Claudio Pizarro has scored six Bundesliga goals this season.

Peru international Claudio Pizarro has said he wants to take part in one more World Cup, looking ahead to the tournament in two years' time in Russia.

Pizarro, 37, joined Werder Bremen as a free agent in September, signing a contract until 2016.

He had warmed the bench at Bayern Munich in the previous season, while injuries restricted him to playing 17 matches for the Bavarians, with just two starts.

On Tuesday, he converted from the spot, for his seventh goal in his last six matches, as Bremen qualified for the DFB Pokal semifinals with a 3-1 shock defeat of Bayer Leverkusen. They are set to visit Pizarro's old club Bayern in late April.

When asked whether he plans to retire despite his great form, he told reporters: "I won't do that. Sorry, I meant to say: I don't want to do it."

The forward, in quotes reported by Bild, added that playing at the 2018 World Cup with Peru is his "great goal."

Pizarro has scored 182 goals in 400 Bundesliga matches for Werder and Bayern, and currently ranks fifth in the all-time Bundesliga scorer list, level with former Leverkusen star Ulf Kristen, and 31 goals behind Manfred Burgsmuller, who is fourth.
