Interim FIFA president Issa Hayatou has kidney transplant surgery

Interim FIFA president Issa Hayatou has undergone a successful kidney transplant, world football's governing body said on Friday.

Hayatou, 69, has had regular dialysis treatment for several years.

In a joint statement, FIFA and the African football confederation said the Cameroonian had surgery on Thursday, but did not specify where the operation had been carried out.

"Issa Hayatou has never hidden the fact that, for several years now, he has been suffering from a renal insufficiency, a situation that has not, however, prevented him from fully performing his duties," the statement said.

"He will continue to fulfill his role as acting FIFA president as intended."

Hayatou's next formal FIFA duty is to chair a Dec. 2-3 meeting of the executive committee in Zurich.

He did not attend the Under-17 World Cup final in Chile at the weekend.

Hayatou became interim president when Sepp Blatter was suspended by the FIFA ethics committee on Oct. 8 while under investigation.

His status as a FIFA executive committee member for 25 years and senior vice-president meant he automatically stepped up to lead the governing body.
