Winter World Cup in Qatar good for players and fans - Lothar Matthaus

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus says holding the 2022 World Cup in the winter will be good for players and fans but "chaotic" to domestic leagues.

FIFA has confirmed that the tournament in Qatar will take place in November and December to avoid the fierce heat of June and July.

Matthaus, who played in five World Cups and won the 1990 tournament with West Germany, said that doing so would make for an enjoyable competition.

"Having the tournament in winter is great from the point of view of fans and players -- after all, it is not exactly going to be snowing in Qatar in June," he told ESPN FC on a visit to Singapore as a Bundesliga ambassador.

"Personally, when I played Morocco in the second round game of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico at Monterrey, the temperature was almost 50 degrees. It was a late afternoon kickoff and I have no idea how we played.

"There were no talks of a winter World Cup then, though it would have been a welcome thought."

However, he also said that UEFA president Michel Platini -- who is set to run for the FIFA presidency next year -- would have to deal with the ramifications for club football.

"It is going to be a chaotic process as it could affect the scheduling of all the European leagues including the Champions League," he said. "How are they going to find a way around this I have no idea.

"Anyway, that is the problem of Mr. Platini."
