Brazil and Flamengo legend Zico has asked his country's football federation to back him in his bid for the soon-to-be-vacated FIFA presidency.
The 62-year-old expressed his desire to run just days after current president Sepp Blatter announced his plans to abdicate the organization's top post back in June.
Standing UEFA president Michel Platini announced his candidacy on Wednesday, and the star of the 1982 and '86 Brazilian World Cup teams is hoping to have the support of CBF before soliciting other federations.
"The first option is this: I am Brazilian, I gave my services to the Brazilian team for 10 years," Zico told Globo.com on Tuesday.
"I sent a letter to the president [of the CBF], laying out the reasons for my candidacy and now I'm just waiting for his reply to see whether he makes the commitment or not, if he accepts or not. But I won't wait long because time is passing rapidly and we have other options."
Blatter will be replaced at an election on Feb. 26 and any candidates must confirm their intention to stand by Oct. 26.
"Usually we have to wait at least a week to know the entity's position. October 26, we have to be registered, that's the deadline. So we have to always have other options. Of course I would love it to be designated by the CBF, but I have to wait for that," he added.
"I haven't [sent a letter] to the other federations. First I will wait on CBF. I hope it will be favorable, I hope it will be positive because I have to be designated by one with the support of four more. I think the support won't be complicated."
