Nicolas Leoz, former head of CONMEBOL, placed under house arrest

The former head of South America's football federation, Nicolas Leoz, has been placed under house arrest following allegations of corruption at FIFA.

Leoz, 86, who has been receiving care for hypertension in the Paraguayan capital Asuncion, was named in the U.S. indictments which charged nine FIFA officials and five marketing executives with handling over $150 million in bribes.

The Paraguayan was in charge of football in CONMEBOL for 27 years before stepping down in 2013 and was a member of FIFA's executive committee for a decade.

Judge Humberto Otazu had ruled Leoz to be detained, but Paraguayan law states that defendants over the age of 70 should not be incarcerated pending trial.

"He is under house arrest," said district police commissioner Clemente Espinola in quotes reported by The Times. "There's a patrol car outside his house."

Enrique Sanz, the general secretary of CONCACAF, was suspended by FIFA on Monday and told he could not carry out "any football-related activities at national and international level."
