U.S. forward Aron Johannsson needs ankle surgery after the World Cup.
His club, AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, said on their official website on Friday that Johannsson will be out 6-8 weeks.
Johannsson played in the Americans' World cup opener against Ghana as a substitute but could not make much of an impact. He did not play in their last three games.
The 23-year-old Johannsson scored 26 goals last season. Born in Alabama to Icelandic parents, Johannsson moved to Iceland when he was 3 and appeared in eight qualifiers for the country for the 2012 European Under-21 Championship. He asked FIFA to change his affiliation to the U.S. last summer.
The Americans were eliminated by Belgium on Tuesday.
