Aguero to miss Switzerland clash

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- Sergio Aguero will sit out Argentina's next World Cup match vs. Switzerland (July 1, 12 ET, ESPN ) because of a muscle injury in his left thigh, the Argentine federation confirmed on Thursday.

- Xhaka: Switzerland have "nothing to lose" against Argentina

"Aguero has a grade 1 injury -- the least serious -- to the left biceps femoris, in his left thigh," Argentina team doctor Daniel Martinez said, adding that the Manchester City forward is receiving treatment and will be evaluated day by day. "Obviously, he won't be available against Switzerland in the last 16. All of our physiotherapy team and the team doctors are going to be working with him to ensure his recovery, with the facilities at our disposal."

Martinez did not specify whether Aguero would be available for the latter stages if Argentina stay in the tournament.

"There are no other injuries in the squad," Martinez said.

Aguero limped off the pitch in the first half of Argentina's 3-2 win over Nigeria on Wednesday.

Earlier Thursday, team spokesman Andres Ventura denied a report by Argentine newspaper Clarin saying Aguero had been ruled out of the tournament because of the injury.

Aguero, 26, started all three of his country's games in Brazil so far, but was withdrawn after just 38 minutes of Wednesday's 3-2 Group F win over Nigeria, with a subsequent medical report stating he had "a muscle problem in his left thigh."

After Wednesday press conference, Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella suggested that Ezequiel Lavezzi was in pole position to replace Aguero.
