Liverpool chiefs are reportedly set to meet to discuss how to deal with Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini. (2:01)

Uruguay defender Diego Lugano has again defended Luis Suarez against accusations he bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, claiming sections of the media have "got something against" the striker.

Suarez, 27, appeared to bite the centre-back in the final stages of a game which finished 1-0 to Uruguay, sending Italy out.

Lugano had already heavily criticised Chiellini earlier on Wednesday for the way he reacted to the alleged incident, and he has now attempted to deflect the attention away from Suarez, who has been asked by FIFA to explain his actions.

Asked by BBC Sport during a news conference to explain what happened, Lugano said: "What incident? The pictures don't show anything. They show an approximation. I don't know what incident you're talking about. Are you talking about the Premier League or the national team? Have you got something against Luis?"

When asked to clarify if he meant nothing had happened between Suarez and Chiellini, he added: "No, the pictures don't show anything. They show an approximation but nothing important.

"Everybody knows the British media have an issue with Suarez. It must sell newspapers in England. Otherwise you wouldn't be here. Yesterday, Uruguay played against Italy and Saturday it will play Colombia.

"I don't know what a British journalist is doing talking about Suarez. It must be popular with the British media. I don't see another explanation. But we're happy with yesterday's win.

"You don't look that happy with Uruguay's victory but well, now comes the hardest part which is facing what I believe is the best team so far in the tournament."

Suarez's lawyer, Alejandro Balbi, has also claimed there is a European campaign against his client.
