Offside, Brazil: On and off the pitch

Throughout the World Cup, we are be bringing you photos from Brazil off the pitch in a series called "Offside, Brazil."

Photography by André Vieira

We visited with 19-year-old Randerson Paiva do Santos at his home in Manacapuru, a town 100 kilometers from Manaus. Randerson is an aspiring professional soccer player and stars on the Princesa do Solimões junior team. But in the past year, the club has lost its local stadium and training ground; as a result, they are unable to afford the costs of hosting its home matches elsewhere. Given those circumstances, players like Randerson are roaming third- and second-division teams in Brazil's interior, making around $680 (U.S.) a month when they are employed.

Randerson recently returned home to help care for his widowed grandfather, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. He was brought up by his grandfather and considers him as his father. While at home, he trains with his former team in a dirt soccer field at the town's main square to keep in shape.

Fans and patrons watched the recent match between Germany and Ghana at a bar located within FIFA's exclusion zone near Arena Corinthians in Itaquera. Road structures and barriers were also built in order to improve traffic near the stadium:
