Then, the bad news ... Jozy Altidore hurt
#INSERT type:image END#
Jozy Altidore was carried off on a stretcher with a hamstring injury. After much speculation and requests for Landon Donovan to get on a plane ASAP (FIFA rules wouldn't have allowed that addition, for what it's worth), the #USMNT said Altidore has tightness in his left hamstring and his substitution was "precautionary." He is set to undergo tests on Tuesday:
Keep well Jozy! Hate to see that happen
- LeBron James (@KingJames) June 16, 2014
Heartbroken for Jozy.
- Sydney Leroux (@sydneyleroux) June 16, 2014
Gutted for @JozyAltidore. Let's hope the news is better than it looks. Ahhh.
- Julie Foudy (@JulieFoudy) June 16, 2014
Roster karma is a beast.
- Bonnie D. Ford (@Bonnie_D_Ford) June 16, 2014
Admittedly I don't know much about soccer, but I am an American and I believe in my heart Mr. Miyagi will fix Jozy's hammy right away.

Dempsey's nose
#INSERT type:video END#
Yes, there were many tweets about Dempsey's nose after he took a shin to the face from Ghana's John Boye:
"Bleeding, beaten, but undefeated, Dempsey returns to the field." Gotta love dramatic calls in Spanish.
- Andrea Canales (@soccercanales) June 16, 2014
Clint Dempsey, destroyer of "hockey players are tougher than everyone" memes all over the internet.
- Arthur Staple (@StapeNewsday) June 16, 2014
Hope it's not broke! Looked as though. He'll be fine.
- LeBron James (@KingJames) June 16, 2014
Things get ugly
#INSERT type:image END#
Things got testy and the match opened up, particularly in the second half, with Ghana putting considerable pressure on the Americans. Fans were getting nervous:

- Crain's Chicago (@CrainsChicago) June 16, 2014
"You have to play like you're in the street, and this goal lead is your life." More Spanish announcing.
- Andrea Canales (@soccercanales) June 16, 2014
What has happened? We were so dominant for the first 31 seconds?
- Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) June 16, 2014
5 minutes of excitement followed by two hours of horrified queasiness. This match is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
- Ryan Nanni (@celebrityhottub) June 16, 2014
I say this with all humility and no pretense, but is USMNT playing a prevent defense?
- Ramona Shelburne (@ramonashelburne) June 16, 2014
Just call her coach @AbbyWambach. https://t.co/mjOH7bkMbw

I'd say that goal has "been coming" but then again, so has this breath of air I just took in through my lungs.
- James Tyler (@JamesTylerESPN) June 16, 2014
That's what happens when you chase the ball for 80+ minutes. You get tired and someone gets beat across the box for the equalizer. 1-1.
- Mark Zeigler (@sdutzeigler) June 16, 2014
Lovely from Dede. Daddy Ayew would be proud #ClubMetro

Holy Brooksie, Batman! #USMNT goes ahead 2-1

Super-sub John Brooks' header helped the U.S. claim all three points in its Group G opener:

It's a final ... and the Twitterverse goes wild!
Just a few of the tweets after the #USMNT wrapped up its win:
Massive, Massive win for United States. #USA v #POR up next in the group on Sunday. Huge match for second in this Group G.
- Dale Johnson (@dalejohnsonESPN) June 16, 2014

Good for the U.S. That said, if they play same turtling style against Portugal/Germany, they're going to get lit up like a Christmas tree.
