Rain, referee fail to deter Mexico

Mexico fought through pouring rain and some questionable offside decisions to beat Cameroon on Friday, but coach Miguel Herrera says El Tri "are focused on overcoming anything."

Striker Giovani Dos Santos saw two goals ruled out for offside, but still put in a man-of-the-match performance, leading Mexico's attack up front alongside Oribe Peralta, who scored the winner in the 61st minute.

Mexico praised Mexico's supporters in the stands, but with hosts Brazil next on the schedule, Herrera said his players are up for the challenge.

"We are not thinking about the refereeing in the next match. We know human error exists, but we are focused on overcoming anything," Herrera said. "The guys are strong to overcome anything and today we showed we are mentally focused.

"The players surpassed my expectations we know these three points were key. We came with our only goal to win.

"There were 25-30,000 Mexicans here and when that goal went in I felt like I was in Estadio Azteca. We are aware that we have a long way to go.

"The [media] didn't have much faith in us, but I saw them working every day. We keep saying believe in us we are going to leave everything on the pitch I said this yesterday and they showed it in the field."

Herrera said Cameroon were challenging to break down.

"I think we were well-matched," he said. "We are aware that Cameroon is a grand team but they are not Brazil. We know that when we face the next game we will have the whole country against us

"We played a great game. The game against Brazil will be different, I say that with all the respect I have for Cameroon.

"We are going to play with determination trying to defend ourselves well. They were intense and generous with their positions. We will come out with everything we are going out to win."

Rain fell throughout the match, but Dos Santos said the weather was beneficial to Mexico.

"I think it helped us, but we are ready to play under any circumstances," he said. "We have good ball handling if the pitch is faster that favours us. It was good that it was raining."
