Fans petition to ban Cleverley from WC

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino welcomed Luke Shaw's call up to the England squad.

An England supporter angered by Roy Hodgson's decision to include Tom Cleverely in his latest England squad has set up a petition in a bid to prevent the Manchester United midfielder from competing at the World Cup.

Cleverley, 24, was a surprise inclusion in the Three Lions' squad to face Denmark in a friendly next week, with many questioning his involvement given that he has failed to impress at United in recent months.

One fan from Blackpool, Glenn McConnell, was so dissatisfied with the decision that he set up a petition, entitled "Ban Tom Cleverley from the World Cup squad," which had received more than 7,000 signatures as of Saturday morning.

The petition read: "Tom Cleverley, owner of 13 England caps, has been regularly selected by Roy Hodgson in his squads without possessing any genuine qualities whatsoever

"We believe in the reputation of this proud footballing nation and that he should be prevented from attending this summer's international showcase.

"Whilst England are considered to disappoint at major tournaments, further embarrassment could be avoided by not having his inept performances undermine the rest team's efforts."

In February, Cleverley claimed he had been made a scapegoat for United's poor form this season under David Moyes following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
