El Tri sets World Cup friendlies

Mexico is "95 percent" done with a deal that would pit El Tri against Portugal in a pre-World Cup friendly on June 6 in Boston, Mexico federation president Justino Compean said Tuesday.

"We are trying to set up matches with qualified teams," Compean said during a media conference Tuesday, adding that the match against Portugal was still pending some confirmation.

A friendly against Chile was ruled out after Chile requested the match be played in Santos (Sao Paolo, Brazil) on June 6, which is one day prior to El Tri's scheduled travel date, Compean said, adding that it is official that Mexico will make Santos its preparation base in Brazil.

Mexico, coached by Miguel Herrera, began its World Cup preparation last week with a 4-0 win over South Korea in a friendly played in San Antonio, Texas. El Tri is scheduled to test its readiness vs. Nigeria on March 5 in Atlanta while hosting another World Cup country to be determined on May 28 at Estadio Azteca followed by a match vs. Eduador in Texas on May 31.

Herrera's squad will return to Mexico for a yet-to-be determined June 3 match and wrap up its schedule of friendlies for a June 6 match in the United States, Compean said.
