World Cup stadium test postponed

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke admits there will still be issues leading up to the World Cup in Brazil.
After some tough weeks for the Brazil 2014 World Cup team there was some happy news at last for the country's president Dilma Rouseff to celebrate on Wednesday.

SAO PAULO -- The first test match at a World Cup stadium in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre will not be played this weekend because infrastructure work outside the venue has not been completed.

The Beira-Rio is not expected to be fully completed until late February, but local club Internacional was set to host matches with limited attendance beginning on Sunday. The matches would serve as test events as the stadium prepares to host five World Cup games in June.

The decision not to play at the Beira-Rio was made because of all the infrastructure work outside the venue.

Brazil promised to have all 12 World Cup stadiums ready by the end of last year. However, five remain under construction.

Also on Thursday, constructors say they have removed the giant roofing structure that destroyed part of the World Cup stadium in Sao Paulo after a crane collapsed last year.

Constructor Odebrecht says it cleared the 500-ton metal structure Thursday, about two months after it crumbled along with the crane. Two workers were killed in the accident, which caused significant damage to the stadium that will host the World Cup opener on June 12.

Odebrecht said in a statement that, with the metal structure out of the way, it can begin repair work.

The Itaquerao is among five stadiums yet to be completed for the World Cup. It is expected to be finished in mid-April, nearly two months before Brazil hosts Croatia in the opener.
