DFB confirms Sami Khedira blow

Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira tore his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in Germany’s 1-1 draw against Italy, the German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed.

Sami Khedira faces a battle to return in time for the World Cup.
Sami Khedira faces a battle to return in time for the World Cup.

Khedira, 26, limped off the field following a collision with Italy’s Andrea Pirlo in the 67th minute of Friday’s friendly in Milan, and the player was immediately taken to hospital.

On Saturday, the DFB confirmed that Khedira suffered an ACL tear and an MCL tear, and he now faces a battle to recover his fitness before the end of the season.

Germany team doctor Dr. Mueller-Wohlfahrt said in an official press release: “Sami needs to undergo surgery, but we have hope that he will be fit in time for the World Cup.”

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng said the atmosphere in the dressing room after the match had been “sad” as a result of the injury, but Germany coach Joachim Loew -- though describing it as a “severe setback” -- believes Khedira has a good chance of being able to play in Brazil next summer.

“He is a great personality and fighter on and off the pitch,” Loew said. “He always thinks positive. That will help him and therefore I am optimistic that he will be fit in time for the start of the World Cup in Brazil.

“We wish him all the best and keep our fingers crossed that the surgery will go well and he can soon start his rehab.”

Khedira, who has won 44 caps for his country, has been a constant in Germany’s midfield ever since replacing the injured Michael Ballack only a few weeks before the 2010 World Cup.

Loew also announced that Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Bayern duo Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer will be rested for Tuesday’s friendly against England at Wembley.

“The England match is one of the last chances for us to experiment in terms of tactics and personnel,” Loew said. “Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer and Mesut Ozil belong to the absolute core of the team, and for me it is now more important to hand an opportunity to other players in the key positions, especially against a great team like England.”

Ozil's Arsenal teammate Per Mertesacker, meanwhile, is set to join the Germany team in London on Saturday evening, the DFB announced, having missed the Italy game through illness.
