Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker will miss Germany’s friendly against Italy on Friday, but his teammate Mesut Ozil has linked up with Joachim Loew’s squad and will take part in their final prematch training session on Thursday.
Gunners duo Ozil and Mertesacker did not travel to Munich earlier this week as both were struggling with a virus, which kept the latter out of the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last weekend.
The Italy game comes too soon for Mertesacker but he should be fit to return to Germany training ahead of next Tuesday’s clash with England at Wembley.
Speaking at a news conference in Munich on Wednesday, Germany coach Loew said that Mertesacker needed a few more day of rest, “and thus will remain in London to hopefully join us on Saturday.”
Ozil, however, appears to have already regained his health. Earlier on Wednesday, Ozil boarded a flight to Munich, where he will do an individual training session in the afternoon, and “if everything runs normal” will participate in final preparations for the Italy game with his Germany teammates.
Lazio striker Miroslav Klose is not so lucky, though, and is facing another “two, three weeks on the sidelines.”
A painful shoulder injury, suffered in Lazio’s game at the weekend, has once again ruled out the 35-year old, who is currently tied with Gerd Meuller at the top of the German all-time scorer list with 68 goals.
