Russia Kit: Through the years

Design: A two-tone dark red design with gold trim will be Russia's contribution to the 2014 tournament, with Adidas also veering away from the simplicity of many 2014 kits to offer a watermark of Moscow's Monument to the Conquerors of Space appearing on the front. As with all Adidas kits at the tournament, the shirt features a stripe across the top of the reverse, while there are three miniature versions of the country's flag on the strip -- on both sleeves and just below the collar. The outfit is completed by red shorts and socks, also featuring gold trim and the same two-tone colour scheme.

Short History: The 2014 World Cup will be Russia's third appearance at the competition since the days of the Soviet Union and the first time that they will have worn red as their home kit. In both 1994 and 2002, white was the colour of choice for the team's shirt, although the rest of the team's attire varied. In the USA, a white shirt with blue and red markings was paired with blue shorts and red socks. Eight years later, white shorts and white socks were preferred, with blue trim throughout. A red home kit was first seen in qualification for Euro 2008, although it had previously been the preferred colour of the Soviet Union side, and has remained ever since.

The greatest kit: Given that there are only two to choose from, it is a difficult decision. The 1994 Reebok design was far from easy on the eye, while the 2002 effort by Nike was a stock design of the company at the time and far from inspiring. Thus, it's fair to say that Adidas may already be winning with their design for Brazil next summer and simply needs some good performances to embed their effort in the general consciousness as a truly memorable Russian shirt design.
