Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar top favorite players among fans in the United States

ESPN FC's Stewart Robson defends his picks for his 2018 World Cup Ultimate XI.
From the group stage to the final, find out who ESPN FC's Gab Marcotti has lifting the World Cup trophy in Russia.

ESPN FC partnered with SurveyMonkey to find out which players U.S. fans will be rooting for during the World Cup, which begins Thursday.

Methodology: This SurveyMonkey online poll was conducted May 30-June 1 among a national sample of 3,752 adults, of whom 1,375 respondents are World Cup followers who either plan to follow the 2018 competition or have watched in previous years.

Also receiving votes: James Rodriguez, Mohamed Salah, Carlos Vela, Harry Kane, Paul Pogba, Andres Iniesta, Luis Suarez, Keylor Navas, Hirving Lozano.

Respondents for this survey were selected from the nearly 3 million people who take surveys on the SurveyMonkey platform each day. The modeled error estimate is plus or minus 2.0 percentage points for the full survey of adults and plus or minus 3.0 percentage points for the sample of World Cup followers. Data have been weighted for age, race, sex, education, and geography using the Census Bureau's American Community Survey to reflect the demographic composition of the United States age 18 and over.
