England's Bronze wins top UEFA women's award

England defender Lucy Bronze won the UEFA Women's Player of the Year, defeating her Lyon club teammates Ada Hegerberg and Amandine Henry for the top prize.

Bronze starred for the Lionesses at the Women's World Cup earlier this year when she won the Silver Ball as the tournament's second-best player behind U.S. star Megan Rapinoe.

Bronze couldn't attend Thursday's ceremony at Monaco, which followed the men's draw for the 2019-20 Champions League group stage, as England was in action against Belgium in a friendly in Leuven.

"I'm ecstatic and super humbled to have won the award, up against two fantastic players," Bronze said in a pre-recorded message. "I want to say a huge thanks to the England team. We had a great summer and I don't think I would have won this award of it wasn't for them.

"It's the same with the Lyon team. We had an amazing season, we won the treble and any one of those girls could have [won this award]."

Bronze joined Lyon in 2017 after playing for Sunderland, Everton, Liverpool, and Manchester City,

Previous winners of the award have been Nadine Angerer (2013), Nadine Kessler (2014), Celia Sasic (2015), Hegerberg (2016), Lieke Martens (2017) and Pernille Harder (2018).
