England defeat hosts South Korea to top group at Under-20 World Cup

England celebrate Kieran Dowell's goal against South Korea on Friday night.

England advanced to the knockout stage of the Under-20 World Cup on Friday by beating hosts South Korea 1-0 to top Group A.

Kieran Dowell's second-half goal ensured the Young Lions reached the second round with South Korea also qualifying as group runners-up.

Dowell swept in 11 minutes after the break, back-heeling a pass to Jonjoe Kelly and then positioning himself for the return pass and a shot into the far corner.

His Everton teammate Ademola Lookman hit the post after 72 minutes as the Young Lions held on for victory in Suwon.

England won Group A with seven points, one more than South Korea, while Argentina ended up in third place after beating Guinea 5-0 for their first win of the tournament.

Goals from Marcelo Torres, Lautaro Martinez (two), Matias Zaracho and Marcos Senesi sealed the victory for the South American side.

The Argentines still have a chance to advance as the top two teams from each of the six groups and the four best third-place finishers advance to the next round.

In Group B, Venezuela kept their perfect record by beating Mexico 1-0, Sergio Cordova scoring the only goal in the 33rd minute.

But the Mexicans stayed in second place and advanced even though Germany defeated Vanuatu 3-2 to also finish the group stage with four points.

The Germans led 3-0 before the late comeback attempt and will have to wait to see if they progress.
