Rene Adler confident of World Cup spot

Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler does not fear missing out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad, despite a huge drop in form this season.

Rene Adler has won 12 caps for Germany.
Rene Adler has won 12 caps for Germany.

Adler, 28, returned to the international fold in November 2012 following a two-year absence, and has been a regular in Nationalmannschaft coach Joachim Loew’s selections ever since.

However, the former Bayer Leverkusen player has produced a string of below-par performances this season, conceding 24 goals in just 11 games.

And with Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller reportedly set for his first Germany call-up on Friday, when Loew announces his squad for the upcoming friendlies against Italy and England, Adler’s place could well be under threat.

But the goalkeeper told kicker: “I have been back with the national team for a year now. I’ve played two good games. There is not a single reason to doubt that I will be at the World Cup.”

Adler currently plays behind one of the shakiest defences in the Bundesliga for a Hamburg side who sit 14th in the table.
