Feyenoord keeper Brad Jones in line for Australia recall

A Socceroos recall could finally be on the cards for Brad Jones with coach Bert van Marwijk confirming he's spoken with the Feyenoord goalkeeper.

Jones, who has four caps, was overlooked throughout Ange Postecoglou's tenure despite discovering excellent form in the Dutch Eredivisie.

It was a situation that surprised Dutchman Van Marwijk, who has given a strong indication the 35-year-old is in contention for next month's pre-World Cup friendlies with Norway and Colombia.

"When I speak to someone, he also feels that he has a chance, and I was surprised that [Jones] had not been with the national team in recent years," Van Marwijk told Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sport.

"I talked to him about that. It was a very pleasant conversation.

"He was very positive about the national team. I am glad about that."

Jones has been enjoying a career-best run of form since moving to Holland from England in 2016.

Last season he kept 17 clean sheets to help Feyenoord win the Eredivisie title for the first time in 18 years.

Jones was said to be on the verge of recall for last year's World Cup qualifiers and Confederations Cup squad but took himself out of contention in the knowledge he would be second or third choice.

Now, apparently again open to selection, a return could shatter the World Cup dreams of one of the three regulars.

While incumbent Mat Ryan appears at no risk of exclusion, back-ups Mitch Langerak and Danny Vukovic have sacrificed much in terms of their club and personal lives to be part of the team.

Earlier this month, former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer backed Jones to make a comeback.

"He's in the best form of his career and has just got better with age," he said.

"He deserves a call up because his form clearly warrants it. I am not sure why Ange Postecoglou didn't select him but that was his prerogative.

"However with a new coach comes a new opportunity and I am sure Brad is more than ready to step up if the chance comes again."
