Dick Advocaat named Fenerbahce boss after quitting Netherlands role

Fenerbahce have unveiled Dick Advocaat as their new boss two days after he walked away from as his role as Danny Blind's assistant with the Netherlands national team.

Advocaat, who left Sunderland last year, has twice managed Netherlands in the past and agreed to return to the national team as Blind's assistant in May, but the KNVB announced on its website on Monday morning that the 68-year-old had "indicated he is going to work somewhere else."

Fenerbahce confirmed on Monday that Vitor Pereira had been dismissed as manager and Advocaat has now agreed to take charge on a one-year contract.

Advocaat was initially expected to retire from club football after saving Sunderland from relegation at the end of the 2014-15 Premier League season on a short-term deal, but was persuaded to stay on. However, he resigned less than two months into the following season with the club in the drop zone.

His coaching career spans 36 years, taking charge of clubs including PSV Eindhoven, Rangers, Borussia Monchengladbach and Zenit -- where he won the UEFA Cup. He guided South Korea to fourth place at the 2002 World Cup and also coached United Arab Emirates, Belgium, Russia and Serbia.

Blind said he was "shocked and disappointed" that Advocaat chose to quit the national team.
