Twente docked three points by Dutch FA as financial problems continue

The Dutch football association (KNVB) has deducted three points from Twente Enschede after the club failed to hit financial targets.

The KNVB set the targets in April after classifying Twente as being in the highest grade of financial trouble in Dutch football after money problems followed their 2010 title win under Steve McClaren.

Club officials -- who have warned that further cuts will need to be made -- will not appeal against the deduction, which was imposed following a warning.

"The sanctions are based on the punishment process in the licensing regulations and the plan that FC Twente agreed with the license commission," a KNVB statement said on Wednesday.

Incoming Twente chairman Aldo van der Laan, in a statement on the club's official website, said: "This is a disgrace for the club. We regret the decision, but will not appeal under formal substantiation.

"Twente will enter into new discussions with the KNVB over the recovery plan."

The club are eighth in the Eredivisie on 35 points from 25 games, and the three-point deduction will see them drop to ninth.

Coach Alfred Schreuder said the players had been told about the situation, adding: "We know that we are going through a tough financial time, but it is very unpleasant to be confronted with this punishment.

"We have to accept it and continue to fight as a team. We owe it to ourselves, and certainly to the supporters."
