Parkhurst hints at Augsburg exit

United States international Michael Parkhurst could be set to leave FC Augsburg just six months after arriving at the club.

Parkurst, 29, joined the Bundesliga side from FC Nordsjaelland on a free transfer in December 2012.

At that time, Augsburg had only picked up nine points from 17 games and were doomed for relegation.

An excellent run during the second half of the campaign, however, meant the side avoided the drop on the final day of the season.

The centre-back failed to force his way into the side, though, racking up just two appearances since his arrival in Germany. He did not play a minute of Bundesliga football after being taken off during Augsburg’s 2-1 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in February.

Despite being contracted to the club until 2015, Parkhust has revealed he could be on his way out during the summer.

“It was a tough half-year for me. When I had the chance to get into the team I got ill. After that I could not make it back into the starting line-up,” he told kicker.

“[The Bundesliga has] great stadiums, a great atmosphere, a very high standard of football week-in, week-out - I am delighted to be part of the league. But it’s not that easy for me. I don’t know how it will go on and I must think about what I’ll be doing next."

Parkhurst is currently with the United States national team as they prepare for their upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Germany, as well as a World Cup qualifier against Jamaica.

“My goal is to be a permanent starter [for the United States],” he said. “But I will need more playing time for that.”
