Everton's Ronald Koeman criticises Jurgen Klopp for 'making a big show'

Ronald Koeman has said he is "proud" of his Everton side after Saturday's 3-1 loss to Liverpool and criticised manager Jurgen Klopp's touchline antics.

Goals from Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi at Anfield condemned Koeman's side to just their second Premier League defeat in 2017.

After the game, the Everton boss was particularly annoyed with Klopp and the Liverpool backroom staff communicating with the referee and the fourth official.

In a fixture that featured plenty of hard-fought tackles, Ross Barkley was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch following a late challenge on Dejan Lovren, which referee Anthony Taylor deemed to be worthy of a yellow card.

"It's part of football," Koeman said of Barkley's tackle, speaking to Sky Sports. "I saw also some tackles from [Liverpool midfielder] Lucas -- and that's all about football -- but we don't make a show like the bench of Liverpool about faults that happened on the pitch.

"We are different, we are more into the game and not about what happened with the referee and linesman and tackles. It's football, it was a hard but a fair game.

"I don't like coaches from the bench the whole time shouting to referees, to [the] linesmen making a big show about tackles. They were crazy and they didn't need an official on the pitch.

"It's not what I like, it's a man's sport and your behaviour has to be like that."

When Klopp was asked for his thoughts regarding Koeman's comments, he replied: "Ronald Koeman spoke about me? Say about it what you want."

On his team's performance, Koeman said the scoreline does not entirely reflect the entire game.

Youngster Matthew Pennington netted his first goal for the club to draw Everton level in the 28th minute, but Coutinho restored Liverpool's advantage less than three minutes later.

"I'm really proud about the team in the way how we played today," Koeman added. "Of course we lost the game, but I think the final result is not reflecting our performance.

"OK, they have some quality players and, in my opinion, we conceded too easy the second and the third [goals], started by our mistake in both positions and they punished us for this. We didn't punish them for the mistakes they did.

"But overall, I think we can be proud of how we played and how we made it difficult for Liverpool. That is how we like to play and how we like to continue."

Meanwhile, Lovren refused to be drawn into his thoughts on the tackle he received from Barkley.

"I don't to talk about this now, it's over," the centre-back told Sky Sports postmatch. "You can expect this in a derby -- tackles like this.

"Tomorrow there will headlines about it, but I will leave it to our manager. I think we saw some nasty tackles last time and it was this time also. I think that's part of football."
