FIFA programme to cover Seamus Coleman's wages after leg fracture

FIFA will cover the wages of Everton defender Seamus Coleman after he suffered a double leg fracture in Republic of Ireland's 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw against Wales in Dublin.

Republic captain Coleman suffered the injury in a challenge for which Wales wing-back Neil Taylor was sent off and has since undergone a successful operation.

He will miss the remainder of the Premier League season, with his wages being covered by the FIFA Club Protection Programme during that time.

The programme provides for a player "injured due to an accident while on duty with his representative 'A' team" and means "the player's club will be compensated for having to continue to pay the player's fixed salary although the player is temporarily disabled and unable to perform footballing activities for his club."

Republic boss Martin O'Neill, speaking at a news conference ahead of his side's friendly against Iceland on Tuesday, said Coleman was "still pretty down."

He added: "I think he's just beginning to come to terms with it. I saw him yesterday and he's still pretty down about it.

"He's not in as much pain, the operation went very well, and it's just a matter of coming to terms with it.''
