Everton manager Ronald Koeman targets new Ross Barkley contract

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has said he is trying to secure midfielder Ross Barkley on a long-term deal and confirmed that the club are still waiting for striker Romelu Lukaku to sign his new contract.

Lukaku has been on the verge of agreeing a new deal, set to make him the highest-paid player in the club's history, since December.

However, despite agent Mino Raiola saying last week that the deal was "99.99999999" per cent done, Everton have yet to confirm it.

But Everton are also looking to secure the future of academy graduate Barkley, who is approaching the final 12 months of his deal.

Speaking ahead of his side's game at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, Koeman said Lukaku's deal "is still not signed" but added: "I heard it is close."

Koeman said Everton "will do everything to keep Ross and to sign a new contract."

He added that talks with the England international "are planned, but I don't think they have started yet."

Asked whether confirming Lukaku's stay could help attract new players in the summer, he said: "In football, you don't get guarantees.

"What will happen for next season will be for next season. It is not the right time to talk about next season."
