Police investigating racist abuse claims during Carlisle-Everton match

CARLISLE, England -- Local authorities are investigating allegations of racist behaviour by fans toward Everton players during Carlisle United's FA Cup home match on Sunday.

The alleged incident happened in the fourth-round game after Everton opened the scoring in the second minute through Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone, who is black.

A public address system message warned fans that racist abuse would not be tolerated, and local police issued the same message on Twitter, asking anyone with information to report it.

A statement from Cumbria Police issued after the game confirmed a probe into the matter.

Speaking after the game, Everton manager Roberto Martinez said he was pleased with the response.

"I thought it was dealt with in a very good manner," Martinez told BT Sport.

The decision to give the warning followed a discussion between Martinez and Carlisle coach Keith Curle.

"We agreed to make an announcement. I thought the referee was very good in how he dealt with that," Martinez said.

"It was just a reaction, something that we don't want to see. It was just a reaction to the celebration of the goal and that was it. It would be wrong to highlight such a moment in an enjoyable footballing festivity."

Curle condemned the fans' actions during his postmatch news conference.

"It is not what we want inside Brunton Park, inside football, or inside society," he said, before adding the club would do everything to ensure any penalties would be adhered to..

When questioned how Kone and Steven Pienaar, who was also targeted by fans during the celebration, were feeling, Martinez added: "They are okay.

"I think they were sensitive and hurt at that moment -- probably they were fearful about the game developing into a difficult afternoon. But it was a one-off incident."

Everton went on to win match 3-0 over the fourth tier side.
