Everton defender John Stones 'touch and go' for West Bromwich Albion trip

LIVERPOOL - Everton defender John Stones is a doubt for Monday's Premier League visit to West Brom as he struggles to overcome a knee injury.

Stones, 21, limped off during Tuesday's 2-1 Capital One Cup third round win at Reading.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez said the England international would be assessed over the weekend but was "touch and go" for the trip to The Hawthorns.

Martinez added that left-back Seamus Coleman, who has missed Everton's last two matches with a hamstring problem, could return on Monday.

The manager said: "They are progressing well. I'm pleased with John Stones' reaction to treatment.

"The next 48 hours are going to be very important. I wouldn't say he's not going to be in the squad. It's too early to make a final decision, but he's touch and go for the West Brom game.

"Seamus Coleman is already working really well on the grass, and he could be involved on Monday."

Martinez said he felt midfielder Ross Barkley was benefiting from a proper summer break after shining in recent weeks.

Barkley scored his third Everton goal of the campaign at Reading on Tuesday, meaning he has already passed his tally for the whole of last season.

The 21-year-old struggled after playing for England at the 2014 World Cup, picking up a preseason knee injury that kept him out until October.

He was allowed to sit out this summer's Under-21 European Championship in the Czech Republic, and Martinez feels the break has been a boost.

The manager said: "He has had a good preseason.

"Last season, he picked up an injury on the Friday before our opening game, and he was catching up with himself after that.

"This season, he came back refreshed after a summer off from football. We all know the qualities he has. He's in a good moment of form."
