Everton boss Roberto Martinez wants transfer window shut during season

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has joined a chorus of Premier League managers who have called for the transfer window to be shut before the season begins.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger and Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal have all expressed frustration that transfer speculation is distracting from the business of important Premier League matches, with Martinez's concern over the issue more acute than most of his rivals right now.

Everton's build-up to their Premier League opener against Watford last Saturday was dominated by speculation surrounding Chelsea's attempts to sign their defender John Stones, with the Goodison Park club rejecting a reported bid of £26 million for the 21-year-old defender.

Now Martinez has confirmed his desire for a change in the transfer window cut-off date, with the deadline moved up a month to July 31 favoured by a growing majority of Premier League managers.

"The window, when it is open and we have to prepare for official games, is very, very unfair. I don't think it is right," Martinez told Sky Sports.

"I think we should have a period where we assemble our squad, and then once the first league game starts everyone is focused."

Mourinho offered up similar sentiments earlier this month, as he showed his annoyance at the persistent debates over transfers at a time when his team are preparing for vital Premier League fixtures.

"For me the transfer window is over," Mourinho told reporters. "I don't like the transfer window open when the competition starts.

"I know it is open, I know my club can buy or sell, but I don't like that feeling. As a coach I am thinking about my players, my squad, and I don't want to think about transfers. Clubs and players need quiet time and respect when the competition starts.

"Imagine a Swansea player plays against Chelsea on Saturday and then goes to Manchester City, then he plays against Chelsea again the next week. I cannot get that into my head."

The English transfer window will close for business at 6 p.m. [GMT] on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and by that time, clubs will each have played four Premier League matches.
