Everton defender John Stones is facing a "test of character" as he deals with Chelsea's interest, according to his captain Phil Jagielka. The Premier League champions had two bids for Stones -- of £20 million and £26 million -- rejected during July, and are widely expected to return with a third. Everton manager Roberto Martinez has indicated that he does not need to sell the 21-year-old, although Chelsea could still attempt to secure a deal with an increased offer. Jagielka was the subject of an unsuccessful bid from Arsenal in 2011, and ended up staying at Goodison Park. The captain says that he will offer any advice that fellow centre-back Stones needs as he deals with the speculation regarding his future. Jagielka told the Daily Express: "It's not an easy scenario. It is difficult for John. He is dealing with it really well. "I have told him to just keep doing what he does because there is a reason why people want to sign him. It is a little bit of test for him now. "It is a test of character and we all know he has a good character. He is a level headed lad. It is easy for people to let it go to their heads or decide not to be totally committed. "But if you look at his performance, then he is a good lad and these little tests in his career will make him stronger." Asked what advice he would give Stones, Jagielka added: "I am not going to discuss in public what I think John should or shouldn't do. "I will speak to him and try to guide him the best I can but that is something that is between the players and the backroom staff."
