Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has stressed that he believes in what manager Roberto Martinez is doing, despite the club's struggles this season.

Everton finished fifth in the Premier League last time around, but are only six points above the relegation zone this time.

Belgium international Lukaku has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season -- his first Everton campaign since completing a permanent £28 million move from Chelsea.

And he said the burden of expectation on him after a successful loan last season, along with the team's league difficulties, had been a learning experience.

"It has taught me a lot, especially mentally," he told Everton's official website. "I'm a very strong boy, but people expect more and more from you.

"When you start scoring, it [the scrutiny] goes away. When you don't score again, it comes back. When you score you are a hero. Personally I don't let my head go down, I just keep working hard.

"It's been a very good learning experience, but I don't want to learn at this time -- I want to win."

Everton face Newcastle at home on Sunday with sections of the Goodison Park support appearing to be losing patience with manager Martinez, who has urged his team to play without fear against the Magpies.

But Lukaku said: "I believe in the team and I believe in the manager.

"I believe his philosophy and the way he's thinking, although I understand the fans expect us to win all the time and want us to give our maximum. I agree with that. But we have to do it together."
