Roberto Martinez sure of avoiding England U21 row over Ross Barkley

LIVERPOOL -- Everton's "very close" relationship with the Football Association will ensure they avoid a row over Ross Barkley's England under-21 availability in June, according to Roberto Martinez.

Barkley, 21, is in contention to be called up for the European Under-21 Championship in the Czech Republic at the end of the season.

However, Martinez is reluctant to allow his midfielder to go, feeling that he would benefit from a break after playing at last year's World Cup for England's senior side.

The Everton boss said in January that Barkley had outgrown the U21 team by establishing himself in the full England squad.

And he is set to discuss the matter with England U21 coach Gareth Southgate before a final decision is made.

"Our relationship with the FA is very, very good. At the end of the matter, it's going to be about what's best for the player and for the under-21s in general," Martinez told a news conference.

"Our relationship in that matter is very good. Now we're facing the most important period of the season for the team and for the player, so you can imagine there's no decision that can be taken now.

"Our relationship with the FA and Gareth Southgate in this matter is very close, and we're going to make the right decision based on what will happen between now and the end of the season, and the needs of the England team."
