Everton's Kevin Mirallas says he's 'ready for a new challenge'

Everton's Kevin Mirallas says he's "ready for a new challenge" as he dreams of a move to the Champions League.

Mirallas has 18 months remaining on his contract after reportedly opening talks for an extension last summer, but when nothing developed by January he said he would postpone all negotiations until the season is over.

Speaking to Belgian newspaper La Capitale, Mirallas said he wants to play in the Champions League sooner rather than later, even if he must leave Goodison Park.

"There have been offers and inquiries, but no real negotiations. January isn't the ideal month for a transfer," said Mirallas, in quotes translated by the Telegraph. "I have never said I absolutely want to leave Everton. I like it over here, but I feel ready for a new challenge.

"I dream of playing in the Champions League next season, with Everton or with another club. I just have to see after the season."

As an 18-year-old, Mirallas made two appearances in a Champions League preliminary stage with Lille, but he has yet to return to Europe's biggest stage.

Everton are currently 12 in the Premier League and are likely out of the race for a European spot, but Mirallas has a different path in mind.

"Don't forget, the 2015 Europa League winners will qualify for the following season's Champions League," he said. "I'll make a decision after the season. I like the Premier League, but Spain also tempts me.

"Atletico Madrid have inquired, but there was no offer."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez rubbished talk that Mirallas might have joined another club on deadline day.

"With Kevin, I think it has just been a story with no substance -- it was never an issue where he could leave the football club in this window," Martinez said.
