Everton 'poised to open talks over new contract for James McCarthy'

Everton are ready to open talks with midfielder James McCarthy over a new contract, sources have told ESPN FC.

McCarthy signed what was described as a long-term contract when he moved to Goodison Park from Wigan on the final day of the summer 2013 transfer window.

The impact he has since made on Merseyside has sparked recent newspaper speculation of possible interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

But speaking last week, Everton boss Roberto Martinez has said he was confident of keeping McCarthy and indicated that he is one of a number of players who could be offered new deals.

"We're delighted with James' form. I always believe that James is a typical Everton player, and that he can grow and get better. He's got a long-term contract. It was a huge investment.

"I always enjoy seeing good reports on our players. I see the interest in, the potential interest in and the compliments paid to James from the outside. But James is a player we look forward to seeing in an Everton top for a long, long time."

McCarthy's season has suffered recent disruption because of a hamstring problem.
