Martinez: A winger is our priority

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that signing a winger is his next priority as the club continue to be linked with a move for Christian Atsu.

Chelsea and Ghana wideman Atsu, 22, has been widely tipped to go to Goodison Park on loan, although no move has yet been confirmed.

Martinez feels that an incoming winger can act as a replacement for Gerard Deulofeu, who returned to Barcelona in May after completing a successful season on loan at Everton.

Speaking after Sunday's 1-1 draw against Porto at Goodison Park, the manager told Everton's website: "Hopefully we will have another new player coming in.

"We are looking for a wide player that is going to help us in a position that we need to strengthen going into the season.

"We are going to take as long as we need but we hope it will be earlier rather than later."

Everton are close to completing a deal to sign Anderlecht's Belgian 18-year-old forward David Henen, who Martinez intends to hand over to his Under-21 set-up while he adjusts to life in England.

The manager said: "David is only a young man and I we believe this is the perfect environment for him to develop and fulfil his potential and we would love to find a way to sign him.

"But that doesn't mean he's going to go into the first-team at all.

"He's a young promising footballer and we think he would be perfect for the group of Under-21s that we have created."
