Spain fail to qualify for European Under-21 Championship

Spain will not defend their European Under-21 Championship title in the Czech Republic next summer after they were beaten in the qualification playoffs by Serbia.

The Spaniards had won the tournament in 2011 and 2013 but, after a goalless draw in the first leg in Serbia, they lost 2-1 in Cadiz on Tuesday night and will miss out on the showpiece next summer.

A Jose Gaya own goal had given Serbia a vital away goal in the first half before Sergi Roberto and Filip Kostic traded goals in stoppage time.

England under-21s reach European Championship after win over Croatia

Will Hughes celebrates his strike for England under-21s against Croatia.

England under-21s have qualified for next summer's European Championship after a 2-1 victory over Croatia in the second leg of their play-off on Tuesday night.

Gareth Southgate's men headed into the match in Vinkovci with a 2-1 lead from the first leg and Liam Moore grabbed a vital away goal inside the first 10 minutes.

Marko Livaja equalised before the break but Will Hughes fired England back ahead to make it 4-2 on aggregate and secure their ticket to the Czech Republic.
