UEFA honours Wales, Iceland fans among best Euro 2016 supporters

UEFA has honoured the fans of Wales, Iceland, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland for their contributions to and behaviour during Euro 2016.

European football's governing body commended the four nations' supporters for the way in which they backed their teams.

Wales fans, who cheered their team all the way to the semifinals, were praised by captain Gareth Bale as a "red wall."

Iceland supporters, meanwhile, were hailed for the atmosphere they created as their unfancied side knocked out England on their way to the quarterfinals.

UEFA will give commemorative plaques to representatives of the four nations' football associations at forthcoming matches.

Newly elected president Aleksander Ceferin said: "Euro 2016 was a celebration of football, and this is thanks in large part to the passion and dedication of fans at all stadiums in France.

"UEFA wanted to reward some of the groups of supporters that were particularly enthusiastic and passionate during the tournament, so congratulations to the national associations who are receiving this award."
