Anthony Martial: My Euro 2016 was 'disastrous,' but I will learn from it

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has said he endured a "disastrous" Euro 2016 for France despite his country reaching the final.

Martial starred for his country but played only 69 minutes for Didier Deschamps' side, who were beaten in the Stade de France final by Portugal.

The 20-year-old, who scored 12 goals for United after being signed from Monaco by Louis van Gaal, told Telefoot: "It was a very difficult Euros.

"We didn't manage to win the title and the coach only played me for 45 minutes -- it was pretty disastrous.

"After that I spent it on the bench, but that happens. I am young, I am going to learn from that.

"It was the first time I had played so much for my club but that is not an excuse. I should have been better."

Martial scored his first senior international goal in a 3-1 friendly win in Italy on Thursday.

Speaking before the game, Deschamps told Martial he has to push himself harder and be more consistent.

The coach said: "At this age, even if he has already proved a lot, he has a lot to learn. He has to maintain a certain level of performance for some time.

"He must push himself a little harder sometimes. It's a state of mind. He's like that, so he needs to battle a little with himself. He needs to get stronger to maintain his level in the long run."
